Professor Ji Hongbing from Xidian University was Invited to SYUCT to Deliver a Special Peport on the High-quality Development of Professional Doctoral Degree Education in Engineering

On November 14th, our university held a special report meeting on the high-quality development of professional doctoral degree education in engineering at the Eighth Conference Hall of the main campus. Professor Ji Hongbing, a member of the National Steering Committee for Graduate Education in Engineering and head of the Engineering Doctoral Special Working Group from Xidian University, was invited to deliver a special report. Wang Guogang, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President of our university, attended the meeting and delivered an opening speech. Representatives from relevant functional departments and schools of the university, including heads in charge of graduate education and key personnel in graduate education management, participated in the exchange.

During the report session, Professor Ji Hongbing gave a presentation titled “Progress and Reflections on Professional Doctoral Degree Education in Engineering.” He systematically reviewed the developmental trajectory, policy background, and training models of professional doctoral education in engineering in China, and explained the differentiated positioning between professional doctorates in engineering and academic doctorates. Drawing on the practical experience of Xidian University in training engineering doctoral candidates, Professor Ji shared distinctive approaches to engineering doctoral education from aspects such as goal orientation, admissions and selection, training programs, degree standards, and process management. He emphasized the critical role of integrating industry and education, as well as university-enterprise collaboration in enhancing training quality. Additionally, he offered constructive insights on current challenges such as “homogenized training,” “insufficient industry-academia integration,” and “work-study conflicts for part-time students,” and provided an in-depth analysis of future reform directions. 

Participants engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Ji Hongbing on practical issues related to engineering doctoral education.

The successful hosting of this report meeting provided valuable experience and insights for the professional doctoral degree education in engineering at our university. Attendees unanimously expressed that they would incorporate the advanced concepts and practical outcomes from the report, actively explore engineering doctoral training pathways that align with national needs and reflect the distinctive characteristics of our university, cultivate more high-caliber leading talents in engineering and technology for the country, and contribute to technological innovation and high-quality industrial development.
