Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess advantages such as tunable structures, large specific surface areas, and ease of surface engineering, making them highly feasible for constructing sensing platforms tailored to specific applications. To meet the growing demand for water-stable luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) in sensing applications, continuous efforts have been devoted to clarifying the structure-stability relationship and developing synthetic strategies for achieving water-stable LMOFs. On August 30, the teams led by Zhu Mingchang and Wu Shuangyan from Liaoning Key Laboratory of Inorganic Molecular-Based Chemistry of our university systematically summarized the design strategies, sensing mechanisms of water-stable LMOF sensors, and their sensing applications in water-rich environments in Coordination Chemistry Reviews (Impact Factor: 23.5). This review provides valuable insights for the research field of LMOF-based sensing. Meanwhile, it points out key challenges that need to be addressed in the future, including issues such as cytotoxicity hindering their practical applications in environmental and biological scenarios, and artificial intelligence-driven predictive modeling still being in its infancy.
