School of Applied Chemistry (SAC) of Shenyang University of Chemical Technology (SYUCT) was formally founded in 2002, on the basis of previous Department of Applied Chemistry constructed in 1958. Currently SAC consists of Institute of Applied Chemistry and Institute of Chemistry covering traditional inorganic, analytic, physical and organic chemistry, hosting Liaoning Key laboratory of Rare Earth Chemistry & Application, Shenyang (international) Key Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry, Institute of Fine chemical, and Institute of Organic synthesis & Catalysis. SAC offers various degree programs at undergraduate and graduate levels. For undergraduate SAC provides two majors, the Major in Chemistry and Major in Applied Chemistry. For graduates, Master degree of Applied Chemistry or Master degree of Chemistry have been granted since 1993. The Major of Applied Chemistry was evaluated as the key discipline in 1994 by the Ministry of Chemical Industry. In 2008 the Major in Applied Chemistry was evaluated as the Liaoning Provincial Key disciplines and was included in an advanced key disciplinary project launched by Department of Education of Liaoning Province from 2009 to 2011, representing the characteristic of SYUCT.
There is a rational and self-sustainable workforce in SAC engaging in the research and education of high quality and competitiveness. SAC now has 73 faculty and staff members, including 13 full professors, 28 associate professors and 16 assistant professors. Among the faculties, 56 staffs have the degree of master and 47 of them have the PHD degree (5 PhD supervisors and 41 Master Student tutors). In addition, there are two faculties were awarded the special allowance from the state council, one prominent expert of Liaoning Province, two awardees of the “Hundred of Talent project” and two “Thousand of Talent Project” of Liaoning Province, 4 winners of distinguished young teachers of Liaoning Province, 2 leaders of disciplines and 4 outstanding talents inside SYUCT.
Fruitful outcomes have been achieved during the reform of teaching activities. We make use of advanced method and means to improve the efficiency at class. Main courses such as Physical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry and Organic chemistry have been categorized as excellent classes of Liaoning Province. Analytic chemistry was classified prominent course inside SYUCT. The faculties of SAC have been awarded teaching achievement prize of second-class twice and of third-class once at provincial level and many other awards inside the university.
The laboratory of physical chemistry was evaluated excellent by Ministry of national Education. The experimental center for basic chemistry has been ratified as Provincial experimental teaching demonstration center.
Research in SAC includes groups working in broad areas covering fine chemicals and intermediates, environmentally benign catalyst & exploration of clean energy, rare earth metal chemistry, coordinating supermolecule in biology, polymer chemistry, metal anti-corrosion and so forth.
In recent years SAC has obtained financial support exceeding 2000 million RMB for research activities. There are over 100 projects carried out in SAC, including 8 projects funded by National natural science of foundation of China (NSFC), more than 40 projects funded by Department of Technology, Department of Education of Liaoning province or Bureau of technology of Shenyang. Besides, SAC builds strong close relationship with community, providing technique support for enterprises to tackle problems encountered in the production and dedicating to prosper the regional economy. Up to date SAC has received 10 awards from the state or Liaoning province, and published 1100 scientific papers of which 400 papers were cited by SCI, EI or ISTP. In addition, 50 patents were acclaimed and 20 patents have been authorized.
Besides the scientific research activities, SAC is dedicated to the education and cultivation of students’ capability. Students in SAC are required to have solid base of theoretic knowledge, expert experimental skill and corresponding engineering knowledge and capability through learning, professional training and teaching activity. SAC encourages students to join competitions such as the “Cup of challenge” amongst domestic universities and has achieved good results. To date, more than 200 students of SAC have taken part in these activities, and some have been awarded first prize of the state (1 time), second-class prize (2 times) and third-class prize (5 times) as well as provincial awards (71 times)
During the past 5 year, the average rate of graduate employment of SAC surpass 95%.Graduates hold positions in Government, stated owned enterprises or private enterprises across the country, and many of them have become the backbones in their fields like chemical industry, materials or medicine. Meanwhile, some graduates continue to read in SAC or other institutes such as Tianjin University, Dalian University of Technology, or Chinese academy of Sciences for master or Ph D degrees by research.
