Principal Li Zhiyi Taught 2017 New Students the First Class of Entrance Educatio

On September 6th morning, Principal Li Zhiyi once again made a report named “To Know the University and Study Well in It” for new students, which is also the first class of entrance education. One main venue and seven sub-venues were set for this report. More than 3,200 freshmen listened to the report.

The report is divided into two parts. The first part is “To Know the University”, mainly elaborating “what is education”, “what is higher education”, “what is higher school” and “what is university”. The second part is “Study Well in a University”, mainly interpreting “what to learn in a university” and “how to study in a university”.

For “To Know the University”, Principal Li interpreted from two aspects: “what is university” and “what is the job of a university”. First of all, Principal Li elaborated “what is university”. He cited Sui Yifan’s description in The Mission and Responsibility of the University. “The university is such an educational institution and academic organization which aims to explore, pursue, defend, disseminate the truth and knowledge, bears the mission of guiding social values, regulating social behaviors, and has the irreplaceable major public influence and driving force of the improvement of human quality and the development of social civilization.”Secondly, Principal Li elaborated “what is the job of a university”, namely, the four major functions of university: talent training, scientific research, social services and cultural heritage and innovation. In the part of talent training, he highlighted the “113” talent training system that is being built by our university: “1 idea” (the result-oriented educational idea), “1 mode” (CDIO talent training mode), “3 measures” (cooperative education, family training, personalized guidance).

For “Study Well in a University”, Principal Li interpreted from the following two aspects: “what to learn in a university” and “how to study in a university”. On “what to learn in a university”, Principal Li pointed out that state builds universities to cultivate talents, and students go to university to become a talented adult. What is a talented adult? Not only become an adult, but also a talent. How to be an adult? Have virtue. How to be talented? Acquire both “knowledge” and “ability”. How to obtain “knowledge”? Inherit knowledge through study, and explore knowledge through practice. How to gain the “ability”? Learning is the foundation, thinking is the key, and practice is fundamental. About “how to study in a university”, Principal Li mainly elaborated on goal, attitude, difference and method. He pointed out that the goal is to get back your “self”, design your life, determine your aim, make an all-out effort, and persevere. The attitude is to be worthy of your parents, worthy of yourself, worthy of conscience, to study hard and work ahead. The difference is to understand the difference as soon as possible, change the role as soon as possible, to adapt to college life, and to become a true college student. The method is that in a university not only be willing to learn, but also know how to learn. Principal Li stressed that the university's learning is “erudite, interrogating, deliberating, discerning, and persistent”, namely, more learning, more asking, more thinking, more discernment, and more action.

Finally, Principal Li earnestly emphasized that the first year is the key year for university study. Students should pay great attention to the reasons of three major problems in the first year: relaxation, contempt, and temptation. Principal Li encouraged all freshmen to cherish four years’ college life, learn more knowledge, get more ability, improve quality, and become qualified students worthy of the Shenyang University of Chemical Technology!

After the report, the representative of new student present flowers to Principal Li Zhiyi to pay tribute. Principal Li amiably took a group photo with the students who were on the stage.
